Yes, you can 100% carry a baton while on duty as a licensed Level 3 Commission security officer in the state of Texas. No, you cannot carry a baton if you are only licensed as a Lv2 Non-Commission security officer (but great to get the training knocked out ahead of time while your Lv3 is processing). Texas DPS does not have a “baton license” or a separate “baton pocket card”- they never have. That said, we will be providing you with a certificate of training after you complete and pass the class which is sufficient to show anyone that is inquiring with you that you have had baton training. That coupled with the fact that you are or will be a Level 3 Commission security officer makes you “good to go” and authorized per TX DPS rules and Texas Penal code. The purpose of this course is to provide you with the basic fundamentals of baton use. In this course, you will learn about the equipment, along with how and when to use it. You will also be taught several officer safety guidelines, basic procedures, additional considerations, liability, and several legal points. Although everything in this course is universal our course specifically covers Texas law as a pertains to private citizen/security officers as provided or noted in the course. Texas Department of Public Safety does require that in order to carry a baton on duty as a security officer you must be (1) a licensed Level-3 Commissioned security officer and (2) have proof of baton training.
