Baton Authorization and Training Clarification
Yes, you are fully authorized to carry a baton while on duty as a licensed Level III Commissioned Security Officer in the State of Texas. However, Level II Non-Commissioned Security Officers are not permitted to carry a baton. That said, taking the baton training course in advance is an excellent idea if your Level III license is currently being processed, as it allows you to complete that portion of your training ahead of time.
It’s important to note that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) does not issue a separate “baton license” or “baton pocket card.” They never have. Instead, DPS recognizes baton training certificates issued by approved private security schools as valid proof of training.
Upon completion and successful passing of this course, you will receive a Certificate of Baton Training, which serves as formal documentation confirming that you have completed the required instruction. This certificate, along with your Level III Commissioned Security Officer license, fully qualifies you under Texas DPS regulations and the Texas Penal Code to carry a baton while on duty.
The primary purpose of this course is to provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skills for proper baton use. Throughout the course, you will learn:
- The different types of batons and their components
- Safe handling and carrying techniques
- When and how to use the baton appropriately
- Officer safety protocols and liability considerations
- Legal guidelines and procedural standards specific to Texas
While many principles covered are universal to the profession, this course is tailored to Texas law and private security operations, ensuring that all instruction aligns with state-specific requirements and DPS standards.
In summary, to lawfully carry a baton on duty in Texas, you must meet both of the following conditions:
- Be a licensed Level III Commissioned Security Officer, and
- Have proof of baton training from a recognized training provider.
